Muslim athletes are no strangesrs to the struggle between keeping the fast during Ramadan and keeping up with demanding training schedules.
This year, the summer Olympics fall within Ramadan, when Muslims normally fast during daylight hours.
However athletes can be exempt from the daily fast during the Olympics if they choose to fast at a later date, some Islamic scholars say.
Olympic officials and mosques have organized iftars during the events to break the daily fast together after sunset.
The iftars are designed for Muslims and non-Muslims to share in the food and festivities together.
